You Paid for a Deep Clean and It Still Does Not Look Clean

Three different things cause this and only one of them is a bad job. How to tell which you are looking at, what to ask for, and what honestly cannot be fixed.

Work out which of three things happened

Before anything else, the feeling that you have been had may be wrong, and it is worth checking. Three very different problems produce the same disappointing floor. The fibers are damaged rather than soiled, the mark needed a treatment it did not get, or the work was hurried. The first cannot be fixed by anybody, the second usually can, and the third should be fixed for free.

The reason this matters is that each one has a different next sentence on the phone. Asking for the right thing gets it. Asking for the wrong thing gets you a defensive answer and a long argument.

One: the carpet is damaged rather than dirty

On the floors we get called out to look at, this is the answer more often than not, and it is the hardest one to hear. Carpet wears out where people walk. The fiber gets abraded by grit underfoot until it no longer reflects light the way the fiber beside it does, and that reads to the eye as a dirty path down the hallway. Cleaning takes the soil out, and nothing on the market puts the fiber back.

Dye marks behave in much the same way. A spilled red drink, a bleach splash from a cleaning product, a pet treatment that stripped color, all of them change what color the fiber is rather than leaving something on top of it. Once the color has gone, washing the area does not bring it back.

Sandy grit is the quiet driver of this in Orlando. It rides in from yards and pool decks, sits down in the base of the pile, and cuts the fiber every time somebody walks over it. That is also why the worst wear is usually in a doorway or the turn at the bottom of the stairs rather than in the middle of a room.

Two: the mark needed a different treatment

Some spots need a specific chemistry and a bit of dwell time rather than more hot water. Protein spills, tannin from coffee and tea, ink, and older pet accidents all behave differently from general soil. If the whole floor was cleaned as one job with one solution and nothing was pre treated, a stubborn spot often survives it.

Pet urine is the clearest example, because the part causing the problem has usually soaked past the fiber into the backing and the pad. Surface carpet cleaning lifts what is on top and leaves what is underneath, which is why the mark can reappear as the carpet dries. This is fixable and it is a different piece of work, not the same piece done harder.

The question worth asking is simply whether the spot was pre treated and with what. A real answer comes back quickly. A vague one tells you it was not.

Three: the job was rushed

Sometimes it is exactly what it looks like. Rushed work has a signature, and once you know it you can see it from the doorway. Lanes that are lighter in some passes than others, edges against the baseboard untouched, stair noses skipped, furniture put straight back onto damp pile. Add a visit that was over unusually fast and the picture is fairly clear.

There is a second version of this that is less obvious. Too much solution and not enough extraction can leave cleaning product behind in the pile, and a floor we find in that state tends to soil again quickly. If yours looked fine for a couple of weeks and then got dirty faster than it ever has, that is worth asking about, and it is worth asking what was used and how it was rinsed.

How to ask for it to be put right

Call the company that did the work, and call them before you tell anybody else about it. Say when the job was done, what specifically still looks wrong, and that you would like somebody to come and look at it. Keep the tone flat. You are not making an accusation, you are reporting a result.

Take photos first. Same spot, same angle, daylight, something ordinary in frame for scale, and leave the timestamps on. One wide shot of each room plus a close up of every area you are unhappy about is enough. Photos end most of these conversations before they get going, because there is nothing left to disagree about.

Ask for a return visit rather than a refund. A refund settles the bill and leaves the carpet exactly as it is. A return visit is the only one of the two that changes what you are looking at, so ask for that first and keep the refund conversation in reserve.

What honestly cannot be fixed

Being straight about this is what makes the rest of it credible. Worn traffic lanes do not come back. Bleach marks and dye loss do not come back. Carpet that has been repeatedly over wet and has separated from its backing does not come back. Delamination, rippling and buckling are repair work for an installer rather than a cleaning problem.

In a lot of Orlando homes the carpet in the main walkways is simply old, and the honest recommendation is to keep cleaning the rooms that still have life in them and plan to replace the hallway. Whoever is standing in your house should be willing to say that. We would rather clean three rooms and tell you the fourth is finished than take money for a floor we cannot improve.

How to avoid the same evening next time

Point out every mark before the work starts and ask what each one is likely to do, and get the answer before the machine comes in. A cleaner who says up front that a spot is probably fiber damage is telling you something useful, not making an excuse in advance. Ask which spots get pre treated. Ask whether furniture is moved or worked around, and ask what the plan is for edges and stairs.

Then walk the rooms at the end while the van is still outside. Three minutes then is worth an hour of phone calls afterwards. That is as true in a College Park bungalow as it is in a new build out by Hunters Creek.

HomeProud is owner operated with no subcontracting, so the person who quotes your floors is the person who cleans them and the person who answers when you call back. If you would rather start again with somebody who will tell you what a clean will and will not do, ask for a quote and mention what you have already tried.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell damaged carpet from dirty carpet?

Get low with a light across the pile. Soil sits on and between the fibers and looks grey or dull across an area. Damage shows as a change in the fiber itself. Wear looks fuzzy or matted and follows a walking path exactly. A dye mark has a hard edge and a color that does not belong. If the shape of the problem follows footsteps, it is usually wear.

Should I ask for my money back or a re clean?

Ask for the work first. A re clean costs the company an hour and puts the floor right, which is what you actually wanted. Money back leaves you with the same carpet. Ask for a refund only when a return visit has already happened and the result did not change, or when the answer you get is that nothing was wrong in the first place.

Is there anything that makes old carpet look worse after cleaning?

Yes. Cleaning removes the film of soil that was sitting evenly over everything, so wear that was hidden underneath becomes obvious. It is a real effect and it is not damage that was just done to your carpet. It is damage you could not see. A cleaner who warns you about this before starting is doing you a favor.

How long should I wait before deciding it did not work?

Look again once the carpet is fully dry rather than while it is still damp. Damp pile looks darker and hides a lot. In Central Florida that means giving it the rest of the day with air moving before you judge it, and looking in daylight rather than under a ceiling light in the evening.

What if the company will not come back?

Put the request in writing with your photos and the date of the job, and keep it factual. Say what you paid for, what you got, and what you would like done about it. If it goes no further with the company, dated photos and a written record of what you asked for are what you will need for any route you take after that, so gather them before you need them.
