What does "guaranteed" mean on a carpet cleaning quote?
On its own, not much you can hold anyone to. The word tells you a company is willing to come back. It doesn't tell you when you have to call, what they'll do when they arrive, or which problems they'll say were never covered.
That gap matters because a guarantee only gets used when something has gone wrong, which is the worst moment to find out what it meant. So read it the way you'd read the price on the quote, and ask for the terms before anybody wheels a machine into your living room.
| Term | A clear answer | A vague answer |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting window | A stated number of days after the visit, written on the quote | Just call us if anything comes up |
| Remedy | A return visit to re-clean the area you're unhappy with | We'll take care of it |
| Who pays | No charge for a covered return visit, trip fee included | Not mentioned |
| Exclusions | Named up front, such as wear, old color loss and new spills | Some stains may not come out |
| Who comes back | The person who did the job, or a named contact | Whoever is free that week |
If a company answers from the middle column without pausing, the guarantee was thought through.
How long should you have to report a problem?
Long enough to see the result properly. Carpet looks different wet than dry, and some marks only show once the pile has dried out and people have walked on it for a day or two. A window that closes before that point covers the cleaning on paper but not in practice.
The exact number matters less than having it written down. A window on the quote means you aren't relying on whoever picks up the phone to remember what was said.
What should the company do if something isn't right?
Come back and look at it, then re-clean the area if it's something cleaning can fix. That's the remedy that changes what you're looking at, so it's the one worth having in writing first. If you're already past that point with another company, our guide on what to do when you're unhappy with a carpet cleaning result walks through the conversation.
Ask too whether a return visit covers only the spot you point to or the whole room around it.
Who pays for the return visit?
You shouldn't, if the problem is one the guarantee covers. A guarantee that still bills a trip charge or a minimum for coming back works more like a discounted second appointment than a promise. That's worth knowing before the first one.
The simple question is this: if I call you inside the window about an area you cleaned, is there any charge for the visit? A yes or a no is a real answer. A long pause is also an answer.

What can a fair guarantee leave out?
A fair one leaves out what a clean was never going to change, and it says so before work starts. That usually means worn pile in the walkways, color that's already gone from a bleach splash or an old spill, damage that was there before the visit, and anything spilled after the cleaner leaves.
Those exclusions aren't the company dodging the work. Cleaning takes soil out of carpet. It doesn't put fiber or dye back, which is why the honest version names those marks out loud during the walk-through instead of at the return visit.
Why do the exclusions matter more in a College Park home?
Because a lot of College Park has been lived in for a long time. According to The Drive College Park's neighborhood history, many of the area's best-known subdivisions were plotted during the 1920s real estate boom, and Walter Rose started naming the streets after colleges and universities in 1921. A home from that era has had decades of furniture, foot traffic and spills.
Some of that is dirt and some of it is damage, and in an older house the two sit right next to each other. A path worn from the front door toward the kitchen, a faded patch near a sunny window and a mark from a spill nobody remembers can all look like dirt from standing height. Settling which is which before the clean is what makes the guarantee mean something afterwards.
Spring oak pollen gets tracked in near the doors too. That's everyday soil, the kind a clean is for, so it belongs on the covered side of the line.
What should you ask for in writing?
One or two plain sentences on the quote do the job. Something like: if you're not happy with any area the company cleaned, you tell them within the agreed number of days, they come back and re-clean it at no charge, and it doesn't cover the wear and old marks they pointed out before they started.
To compare two companies, run the same short routine with both.
- Get each company to say what they'll do if you're unhappy with an area, in their own words, and write it down.
- Ask how many days you have to report a problem, and whether that goes on the quote.
- Check whether a covered return visit carries any charge, including a trip fee.
- Walk the rooms together and ask which marks they expect will not come out.
- Ask who comes back if you call, and pick the company whose answers you could repeat to someone else.
